State Representative Jeanette Nuñez introduces the True Origin of Digital Goods Act, which will prevent pirates from profiting off stolen work and avoiding legal action by requiring web operators to “post their true and correct name, address, and either a telephone number or email address.”
In an effort to stop online piracy, the rationale for the bill states: “Bad actors are unlikely to disclosure the personal information required by this bill, and thus, this bill will allow owners of copyrighted works to indirectly protect their intellectual property.”
The bill faces criticism from the Electronic Frontier Foundation for its effects on privacy and free speech.
H.B. 271 is currently on its way to the Florida House after being cleared by the Business & Professions Subcommittee.
