Gauntia and Pradhan press for legal notice against Coca Cola

On Sunday, the televised remix version of the utmost widespread recorded track in the history of Odisha, specifically “Rangabati”, received legal warnings after it was publicized on MTV Channel’s Coke Studio Channel 44.

Prior to this event; legal notices from Gauntia and Pradhan were already delivered to Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverage Private Limited, Hindustan Coca Cola Holdings Private Limited, Viacom 18 Media Private Limited over their legal representative in lieu of copyright infringement. The exposure of the remix left copyright owners of the legitimate song in pain and shock. Cognizance was also directed to Ram Sampath, Sona Mohapatra and Rituraj Mohanty, who vocalized the remix version of MTV Coke Studio.

Meanwhile, Jitendra Haripal, who chanted the widely held folk song of the 1970s together with Krishna Patel, spoken that the remix was not in good taste and it offended the sentiment of the general public in the region.

Supreme Court lawyer Sagar Kumar Pradhan supposed that the copyright of the song is within Prabhudatta Pradhan and Mitrabhanu Gauntia’s verdict and it was clear that no consent had been sought from them aimed at the replica of Rangabati. Accordingly, the re-creation of the song violates the Copyright Act 1957.
